Rhythm of Learning

New School Losbates

New school Losbates was a design competition floated by the district administration of Losbates, Czech Republic. Early on during my internship I got to be a part of a designing team, it was a great learning experience. This helped me understand how alien contexts, cultures are approached and an understanding about it is developed about their lifestyles and needs, which on later stages help in developing a design. As an intern I was responsible for doing research, making models and conceptual drawing.

GOAL

Design a local school for Losbates district

"We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us." - Winston Churchill

The school is visualized as the new cultural center of the Losbates group of districts in Czech Republic. The region has a domestic character and the pitched roof signifies this. The school building attempts to unify with the surroundings by adopting this form. A series of pitches coming together gives a lilting tempo to the roof-scape which continues with the rhythm of the buildings around. On the inside of spaces, the pitch relates back to a domestic scale and creates a sense of safety for young minds.

CASE STUDIES

Studying  school typology in European context that matches the climate too

CONCEPTUALIZE

Generating a conceptual ideas for different layouts with the help of models

DESIGN

Transforming the conceptual idea into drawings and 3D visualizations

PRESENTATION

documenting the process and outcome in a document that conveys the idea

Models help to understand the design better

Design Development Process (top L) : Transcending conceptual design into models at every step is no harm. Rather a key factor for designing a balanced layout.

Site Layouts (top R) : Axonometric drawing depicting different aspects of the design.

Program Distribution: This diagram helps in understanding the functional distribution of the design through a color chart.

Structural Detail: Axonometric drawing to understand the major grid layout and a schematic design to understand the structural detail required to design insulated walls.

The west edge of the site has been converted to an open plaza that falls on the tourist trail connecting the north and south of the district which activates the town as an important space in the neighborhood. It serves as a vegetable garden, playground in the winters, outdoor classroom as well as an assembly point.

A solarium space made of transparent material has been envisaged at the ground level so that it can capture the solar gain of the sun in the winter months. The upper levels have skylights on the south side which help in capturing the sun, maintaining temperature and modulating daylight.
